Science is going beyond merely curing diseases and is addressing the human lifespan itself. It appears that lifespans between 100 and 150 will become common. It also appears that the old-timers of tomorrow will spend a lot of that extra time fighting off really old mice.
Turning Off The CLK-1 Gene
This is one of several therapies we’ll see which result in life extension in mice through addressing the mitochondria – the cells’ ‘power centers’.
The ‘mitochondrial free radical theory of aging’ insists that any therapy that reduces the oxidation of mitochondria is a good thing. This particular therapy has been shown to increase the life spans of mice by thirty percent.

Here’s a technique that not only adds the usual thirty percent to the human lifespan but combats cancer at the same time.
Each of these is a different version of caloric restriction, which has been shown to extend the life-span of lab mice by as much as forty percent. And it’s something you can do yourself.
SkQ therapy, addressing the mitochondria again, not only give mice an extra thirty percent, they are shown to diminish many age-related diseases, including strokes, infarctions, hemogram abnormality, osteoporosis, reproductive system disorders, behavior change and visual impairment.
Turning Off The AC5 Gene
Knocking out the Adenylyl cyclase type 5 gene in mice increases their lifespan by thirty percent because of its powerful antioxidant effect.
Growth Hormone IGF-1
Here, a lot of the excitement surrounds a kind of dwarf mouse which is entirely without growth hormone – and which has gained as much as seventy percent in life expectancy.
Overexpression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase is a bit mysterious. We don’t know exactly why it works – only that life extension seems to be as much as fifty percent.
Telomerase Plus p53
Normally, p53 combats cancer cell growth but shortens life span. Something different happens when combined with telomerase, which extends life by lengthening the cells’ telomeres. It resets the body’s aging clock at the root.
Fat-specific insulin receptor ‘knockouts’ in mice mimic the effects of fat reduction surgery, adding an average eighteen percent to their lifespan.
Surgical Removal Of Fat
Most of the time, such procedures are as much about vanity as they are about health benefit. But they do have the benefit of extending life span.
Metformin: A Calorie Restrictor
Metformin has been shown to have effects similar to caloric restriction, though only to the tune of a comparatively modest ten percent.
